Caged Bird

Beautiful snow white feathered creature
bows his yellow crest toward me
to be patted
through the cage wire.
'Hello Cocky, pretty Cocky'.
Bird of the wild
sucking up.

Beautiful snow white feathered creature
bird of the wild
caught by human hand
sentenced
captive
for six score years
in a cage.

Beautiful snow white feathered creature
no room to stretch
those wide wings
to circle, looking down
on the earth below.
Just a box
the floor covered with bird droppings.
